Benjamin has broad experience of LP and GP representation, secondary transactions and general asset management matters.

Benjamin advises international and regional sponsors on fund formation matters, including on the establishment of closed-ended funds, hybrid funds and bespoke transactions such as secondary transactions, joint ventures, club deals and managed accounts.

He works closely with the firm’s M&A practice to advise private capital clients on transactions with fund elements.

Benjamin also advises sovereign wealth funds and other institutional investors on their investments in private funds. Over recent years, he has advised investors on several billion US dollars’ worth of commitments to private funds. He is well versed in the fund terms typically seen in Asian and US buy-out funds, real estate funds and technology-focused funds.

Background

Benjamin trained and qualified at Herbert Smith Freehills in London. Prior to joining the firm as a partner in Hong Kong in 2024, he was a counsel in the Asia-Pacific private funds group of another international law firm.

Benjamin holds a bachelor's degree in law from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and a postgraduate diploma in legal practice from BPP Law School in London. He is qualified to practise as a solicitor in England & Wales and Hong Kong.

He speaks English and German, and has some Mandarin and Cantonese language skills.
